Tourist attacked by alligator at 6th hole

VENICE, Fla., June 26 (UPI) -- A visitor to Florida learned how hazardous water hazards can be when he was attacked by an 11-foot alligator on the sixth hole of a golf course.

Bruce Burger reached into a pond to retrieve a ball at the Lake Venice Golf Course, the Sarasota Herald-Tribune reported. He felt something biting on his right arm and trying to pull him into the pond.

While Burger used his left arm to fight the alligator off, he screamed for help. Janet Pallo, who was playing the fifth hole, converted her golf cart to an ambulance.

"I saw him reach down to get his ball and he yelled ... 'Help. Help. I've been bitten by a gator,'" Pallo told the newspaper. "I had the pedal to the metal, but the cart didn't seem to go fast enough."

State wildlife workers trapped the one-eyed alligator, nicknamed Morse. The pond had an alligator warning sign and course regulars, unlike Burger, who was visiting from Tennessee, knew a large alligator lived there.

"If your ball goes down there, you let it go," golfer Dennis Weaver said to the Herald-Tribune. "Most people have the common sense not to go by the water."
