If you somehow missed it, here is Abby Wambach’s amazing goal at the very end of extra time to put USA into the penalty kicks yesterday against Brazil.
The header, scored in the 122nd minute, was only made possible thanks to a jaw-dropping pass from Megan Rapinoe.
“Megan Rapinoe just put that ball on my head,” said Wambach. “Luckily I didn’t miss and the rest is history, I guess. We had the momentum going into penalties. Shannon Boxx being able to re-take that first one obviously gave us a lift. Getting that first goal is huge.”
Spurred on by the goal, USA went on to beat Brazil in the penalty kicks 5-3 in the 2-2 game thanks to an Ali Krieger clincher.
“I have no words,” said U.S. head coach Pia Sundhage. “Phenomenal. The goal and then the PKs. Someone is writing this book. There is something about the American attitude to find a way to win. Unbelievable.“
USA advances to meet France on Wednesday in the World Cup semifinals. Sweden and Japan will clash in the other semifinal.
